I wrote a blog post last month about my amazing closet makeover that was about 99.9% IKEA organizational products. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, you can find it here. I mean, the yarn wall alone should be enough to lure you over there, right?

I thought I’d write a post that goes beyond the closet and talks about the best IKEA finds for fiber lovers and how I use them. If you’re new to my blog you may not know this, but I am (at the time I am writing this in 2021) 11 years old. That means my entire fiber empire needs to fit in my little bedroom at the end of the upstairs hallway. In other words, me, my stuffed bears, my three looms, my two spinning wheels, and my mountains of fiber need to be super organized or we’ll spill out into the hallway. Thankfully IKEA pretty much has a storage solution for everything… even fiber!
Here are my IKEA must-have items and how I use them in in my fiber world!
#1 SKADIS! My epic yarn wall above is totally possible thanks to SKADIS. They’re like pegboards. They come in different sizes. You can choose between white and brown. Then there are the accessories. Swoon! You can get hooks, cups, shelves, garbage receptacles, and more! I have 12 of them in my closet for the yarn wall and hundreds (literally) of these hooks to hold the caked yarn.

I also have one over by my IKEA weaving table (more on that later!) with a greater variety of accessories on it. It is great to have everything handy and organized right nearby when I am working on a project. Plus, by putting it on the wall I don’t clutter up my work table.
#2 FINNVARD! My 32” Ashford 8-shaft loom – named Mama Bear – is a bit of a beast in my itty bitty room! So when I was planning the layout I definitely had to take her into consideration. One of the pickles in my design plan was height and sizing. I am a peanut-sized weaver. At my last physical I was in the 25th percentile for height, but I do keep my fingers crossed for a growth spurt. I really wanted an adjustable table and an adjustable chair in my weaving corner so that as I grow I can adjust my set-up and always be comfortable.

These trestle table with a LINNMON top are great for just that! They’re white and clean looking so they don’t seem big and clunky in my little space. Plus they have these little shelves underneath for storage. I found these cute little sheep storage bins at At Home and they fit under there just perfectly!

#3 MOSSLANDA! Mosslanda ledges are just amazing! We have had them in every house I have lived in such I was born. They are super versatile, inexpensive, easy to hang, and more. Plus, you (or in my case, my dad) can cut them to any length to fit your space because they’re solid on the inside. I have these awesome ledges in two places in my room. Above my IKEA mirror – that has been in my room since I was born – I have a ledge to showcase some needle felting that I am especially proud of. I created these using a painting for inspiration and then framed them in some RIBBA frames from – you guessed it! – IKEA!

In my weaving corner I have four more MOSSLANDA ledges. The one on the left has been cut shorter so that it fits the length of the wall perfectly. These ledges help me keep my weaving cones organized. As you can probably tell from my epic yarn wall, I like having my fiber out in front of me where I can see it. When I am looking at it I am often sparked with ideas, color combinations, and projects. The ledges are the perfect size and a great, inexpensive way to display everything.
I also have a TV on the lower row of ledges here. My grandpa drilled a hole through one of the ledges so I could run the TV power cord through it. I don’t watch shows in my room usually, but I can Chromecast my Jane Stafford videos to the TV and watch them while I am weaving. Or I can log into my virtual classes and weave while I listen to the presentation. It is at the perfect height for me!

P.S. You might be wondering what the framed quote is on the bottom ledge. It is from the book How To Win Friends and Influence People.

#4 PAX! No room in our house is complete with PAX units! We have one in our loft area to hold craft supplies, fabric, and more. My parents closet is filled with them! My grandparents live with us and they have a wall of them to hold all of their goodies. The reason PAX units rock SO much is because they have organizers to fit inside of them. There are drawers, shelves, shoe racks, closet rods, and more. So pretty much whatever you need to store… it will fit inside of a PAX unit nicely. They even have an online planner where you can layout your space and then just hit “add to cart” to make a shopping list.
I have three PAX units in my closet. One is the deeper unit and the other two are more shallow. This is what worked best in my space and held what I needed the best. I don’t have doors on my units, but you can buy doors to match pretty much any room. The deeper unit is perfect because I can fit my Schact Rigid Heddle Loom – named Baby Bear – there. My Clemes and Clemes drum carder fits there. My e-Spinner 3, and more. That one holds the *BIG* stuff! The shallow units are great for holding tools fiber braids, books, and more.

#5 IKEA HACKS! Ok, so this isn’t technically something you can just walk into IKEA and buy, but it is one of my favorite things about IKEA. You can take just about anything from IKEA and hack it to use it for whatever you want. If you type “IKEA HACK” into Google or Pinterest, you’ll be busy all day looking at the creative ways people have used IKEA goodies.
My favorite IKEA hack is my bed. Because my fiber paradise is small I wanted to dedicate as much space as humanly possible to fiber and fiber equipment. My room has this wonky little alcove, so I decided to make that my entire living space so that the rest of the room and closet could be reserved for fiber. I crammed all of my clothes and my sleeping space into the alcove beautifully with some fun IKEA hacks.

I used two Malm dresses to make the bed platform. And when I say “I”… I mean “I”! I built those two dressers all by myself! My dad and I then built a platform that sits behind the dressers to support the rest of the mattress. We added a bookshelf in the “dead” space in between the two dressers where I can keep some of my favorite fiber books and magazines. It is a great way to make the most of a small space.
So if you have a tight space, you love organizing, or you just love an uncluttered look… IKEA has a gazillion and one ways that you can organize your yarn empire on a budget.
